For decades, coal has been the backbone of India's power sector. Today, its role is rapidly evolving beyond conventional combustion. Through advanced gasification technologies, coal and lignite are emerging as valuable feedstocks for producing synthesis gas, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, synthetic natural gas and a wide range of downstream chemicals that can significantly reduce India's dependence on imports.
This transformation has not happened overnight. It has been the result of sustained policy reforms, technological advancements, industry participation and a growing national commitment to maximise value from India's domestic coal resources.
For decades, coal has primarily served as a source of electricity generation. Today, driven by ambitious government policies, unprecedented financial incentives and a renewed focus on industrial value addition, coal and lignite are emerging as strategic feedstocks for producing chemicals, clean fuels, hydrogen, methanol, ammonia and a wide range of downstream products.
The conversation has shifted from "Why Gasification?" to "How quickly can India commercialise it?"
