Waste-to-Energy 2023

Special Focus on Biomass Co-Firing: A Renewable Alternative

9th Sucessful Edition
of CONFERENCE + EXPO

19 & 20 October 2023, NDMC Convention Centre - New Delhi

The total estimated energy generation potential from urban and industrial organic waste in India is approximately 5690 MW.  The increasing industrialization, urbanization and changes in the pattern of life, which accompany the process of economic growth, give rise to generation of increasing quantities of wastes leading to increased threats to the environment. In recent years, technologies have been developed that not only help in generating substantial quantity of decentralized energy but also in reducing the quantity of waste for its safe disposal.

To recover energy from the waste in the form of Electricity and Biogas/Syngas , a wide range of technology options are available in form of BIOMETHANATION, INCINERATION, PYROLYSIS & GASIFICATION. India’s vulnerability to climate change is a prime motivation for the country’s policymakers to act, but concern over India’s energy security and will spend a hundred billion dollars this year on oil imports which is another driver.

Urban India, which is the world's 3rd largest garbage generator, generates about 277.1 million tonnes of waste every year, and it is expected to rise to 387.8 million tonnes in 2030 and 543.3 million tons by 2050. Above this India also generates about 350 million tonnes of agricultural waste every year. Being a thermal energy dependent country, India faces severe electricity shortages in many areas due to heat waves and sometimes coal shortages; Biomass-Cofiring is the best low-cost option for efficiently and cleanly converting biomass to electricity by adding biomass as a partial substitute fuel in high-efficiency coal boilers.

Biomass co-firing is the practice of substituting a part of the fuel with biomass at coal thermal plants and also globally accepted cost-effective method for decarbonising a coal fleet. Converting biomass to electricity, in an efficient and clean way, and to reduce GHG (Green house Gases) emissions of the power plant. It can help cut emissions from combustion of fossil fuels, address India’s burgeoning problem of farm stubble burning to some extent, reduce waste burden while also creating jobs in rural areas. To promote sustainable energy practices, the Ministry of Power recently have announced the revision of biomass co-firing policy. This revision will enable power plants to purchase biomass pellets at benchmark prices, reducing import dependencies and enhancing the adoption of biomass as a renewable energy source. “Price benchmarking of pellets will enable the TPPs as well as pellet manufacturers to establish a sustainable supply mechanism for co-firing of pellets. The benchmarked price, as finalised by the committee under CEA, will be effective from 1st January, 2024"

Adopting Bio CNG is the sustainable solution for reducing pollution, enhancing the quality of life, and increasing economic development. Compressed biogas (CBG) market is expected to grow from USD 1.47 billion in 2022 to USD 2.25 billion in 2029 at a CAGR of 6.3% in the 2022-2029 period, in India. With the aim to curb greenhouse gas emissions and make our nation environment-friendly, the Government of India has introduced many key programs like the SATAT scheme, Waste to energy program, National policy of Biofuel, and Biogas scheme to have a green planet developing rural economy while enhancing farmer’s income, reduction in LNG/crude imports thereby huge savings in forex, utilization of domestic feedstock to produce biofuels, climate change mitigation, introducing upgrading technology to generate bio-fuels, and enabling India to create more employment and business opportunities.

A Pathway to Energy Transition

Economic growth is deeply linked to energy availability. The extent of energy utilisation as a driver of economic outcome, in turn, impacts resource availability. This is particularly true for India, which is projected to be the world’s most populous country in a few years. As the world’s third-largest energy-consuming country, 80% of India’s energy demand is currently fulfilled by coal, oil and solid biomass.

Smarter Choices for Tomorrow

Today, the energy and clean tech sectors, as well as the utility industry, are key to cities and industrial hubs achieving net-zero targets and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, through decarbonising and investment in innovative alternatives. It is, therefore, imperative we plan for a clean and sustainable ecosystem for our future generations.

Mission Energy Foundation; expertise on researching and conducting conferences on waste to energy over a decade now and has developed a thorough understanding of the various technology options and their viabilities. Diverse business opportunities along the value chain, the global scenario and the market segment for each of the waste to energy technologies are well known to us and we are poised to provide a balanced opinion about waste to energy industry.

To promote a better understanding of role solid and liquid wastes can play in providing power, chemical and refining industries with economically competitive and environmentally conscious technology option to produce electricity, fuel and chemicals; Mission Energy Foundation have Religiously and Dedicatedly Given 15 YEARS to the Nation with 12 EVENTS on Waste-to-Energy and Waste Heat Recovery, Creating Forums of Discussion; Exchange of Ideas; Sharing Practical Experiences; Govt. Advocacies & Networking Opportunities to Professionals & Businesses WORLDWIDE.
